Young Chinese Woman Loses English-Speaking Ability After Health Scare

Guangdong, China – A puzzling medical case has emerged in China, where a 24-year-old woman suddenly lost her ability to speak English following a health incident. The case has baffled Chinese doctors, especially given her previous fluency in the language.

According to Wan Feng, Director of the Neurosurgery Department at a public hospital in Guangdong Province, the young woman abruptly lost her English-speaking skills last week after falling ill, retaining only her ability to speak Mandarin. While she could still read and understand English perfectly, she was inexplicably unable to vocalize a single word in the language.

The woman, who had been studying abroad for over a year, was proficient in English, in addition to Mandarin and Cantonese. Frightened by her sudden inability to speak English, she sought medical attention. Initially, doctors suspected a brain tumor affecting her language function. However, an MRI scan revealed a cerebral hemorrhage in the left side of her brain, which was identified as the cause of her lost English-speaking ability.

She underwent brain surgery to alleviate the pressure. Remarkably, the procedure restored her English-speaking ability, allowing her to continue her studies abroad. Her unique story has, however, sparked humorous reactions on social media, with some commenters jokingly asking if similar surgeries could help them improve their foreign language skills.
