The Addis Ababa City Administration Justice Bureau has announced new regulations governing dress code and accessories for hotel industry professionals. The regulation, numbered 178/2017, establishes a standardized system for clothing, jewelry, and cosmetic use for employees working in hotels and similar service establishments, with the primary goal of preserving national culture and values.
The newly implemented dress code includes specific guidelines prohibiting revealing attire such as shirts exposing the chest area or clothing revealing areas below the neckline. For female employees, skirts must not be shorter than knee length. The regulations also restrict the wearing of jewelry and accessories on visible body parts, with the exception of wedding rings.
According to officials, these regulations aim to protect industry professionals from potential physical and psychological pressure and unwanted harassment. Additionally, the measures seek to ensure that hotel services in the capital meet international standards while maintaining cultural integrity.
The City Administration has outlined plans for regular monitoring to ensure compliance with these new regulations. The implementation will be overseen through a collaborative effort between the Addis Ababa Culture, Arts and Tourism Bureau, the Addis Ababa Police Commission, and the Code Enforcement Authority.
